Claude vs GPT-4.5: Which AI model is better for your work?

Claude AI vs ChatGPT 4

Finally! ChatGPT just got more ‘Claude-y’

For a long time, ChatGPT has been my go-to AI. Not because it was the first, but because it’s robust, versatile, and practical for real-world tasks.
But I’ve always wished it sounded more natural, like Claude.

Claude, developed by Anthropic, had a human-like, conversational tone from the start. It wasn’t as feature-rich as ChatGPT, but it felt more intuitive in how it responded.

Now, with GPT-4.5, it seems OpenAI is closing that gap. But is this really the upgrade we’ve been waiting for?

GPT-4.5: more creative, but at a cost

Ethan Mollick summed it up well:

“Been using GPT-4.5 for a few days and it is a very odd and interesting model. It can write beautifully, is very creative, and is occasionally oddly lazy on complex projects.”

It’s a shift, ChatGPT is leaning into creativity, while Claude’s latest update is winning over coders.

But there’s another issue: cost.

  • GPT-4.5: $75 per 1 million tokens
  • GPT-4.0: $1.50 per 1 million tokens

That’s a huge price jump. But why should you care?

Every time you use AI, whether for writing, automating tasks, or generating images, it costs something to process. Right now, many people use AI for free. But as businesses integrate AI deeper into daily workflows, these costs will matter.

A “token” is simply a way to measure text, like counting words. The more text AI processes, the more tokens it uses. As AI becomes more automated, personalized, and connected to other tools, expect costs to rise.

Are LLMs in their “awkward teen years”?

It feels like large language models (LLMs) are still figuring out their identity. They’re growing fast, changing rapidly, sometimes improving, sometimes taking a step back.

For example:

  • Claude was known for its human-like responses. Now, it’s excelling at coding.
  • ChatGPT was dominant in structured tasks. Now, it’s more creative, but coding performance is mixed.

It’s like they’ve swapped personalities overnight.

This is all part of AI’s evolution, finding the right balance between intelligence, usability, and cost.

Where do we go from here?

One thing is clear: AI is shifting from general chatbots to specialized tools.

  • If you need coding help, Claude might now be the better option.
  • If you need creative, engaging writing, GPT-4.5 is leading the way.
  • If you need automation and integration, the next big leap will come from AI agents (models that can complete tasks on their own).

For now, use what works best for you. AI is evolving fast, but the best model is the one that helps you get things done today.
